How Many Cutlery Pieces Do You Need? A Simple Guide to Settings and Sets

What a place setting is, what a service for four means, and how many pieces to buy for a couple, a family, a dinner party or a new home.

16-piece wood grain cutlery set for four

Quick answer: A place setting is one knife, one fork, one spoon and one teaspoon. A “service for four” is four place settings, which makes 16 pieces. For a couple, buy one set of 8 pieces. For a family of four, 16 pieces. For a dinner party of six, 24 pieces, or 16 plus a second set of 8.

Most people buy cutlery in a hurry, then find they are short of forks on the night of a dinner party or have a drawer full of spoons and no knives. Working out the number in advance takes a minute and saves a lot of frustration.

What a place setting is

In most UK homes, a place setting means the cutlery one person uses for a standard meal: a dinner knife, a dinner fork, a spoon and a teaspoon. Some people also count a dessert spoon or a fish knife, which adds one piece per person.

Cutlery sets are sold by place setting, so a “16-piece set for four” has four of each piece. Always check the listing for the exact pieces, because some sets use a tablespoon and others a dessert spoon.

How many pieces for each situation

Situation People Place settings Pieces (4 per setting)
A single person 1 1 4
A couple 2 2 8
A family of four 4 4 16
A dinner party of six 6 6 24
A family of four plus guests 6 to 8 8 32

Buy a little more than you need

Cutlery goes missing, gets put in the wrong drawer, or is used for cooking. A good rule is to add one or two spare pieces of the ones you use most, usually forks and teaspoons. You can buy these separately from the same range if the set is available that way.

Serving pieces are a separate question

Serving spoons, cake servers and serving tongs are not part of a place setting. Buy them for the meals you actually cook. A pasta dinner needs tongs or a server. A wedding cake needs a cake knife and server. A barbecue needs long tongs. See our serving and cake range, and our guide to the best tongs for pasta, barbecue and buffets.

A new home: what to buy first

  1. One full set for four. This covers everyday meals and visitors.
  2. Two or three everyday serving pieces. A serving spoon, a pair of tongs and a spatula cover most cooking.
  3. A small set of kitchen tools. A garlic press, a zester and a peeler are useful from the first week.

Check the set before you buy

  • Is it a service for four or six?
  • Does the description list every piece, with the exact spoon type?
  • Is the steel grade stated? See our guide to stainless steel grades.
  • What is the return policy? All KitchenGrip orders have 30-day returns.
